Before leaving Austria, we actually took a day trip to Bratislava, Slovakia. Vienna and Bratislava are the world’s two closet capitals and we figured it wouldn’t hurt to add another country to the list! Our time in Slovakia was nice but pretty uneventful. While the medieval downtown makes for a pleasant area to stroll in, a majority of the city still seems to be stuck in the Cold War. We were hard pressed to walk anywhere in the city without seeing the grey block buildings put in place by the Red Army. Michael and I did get to try some traditional Slovakian food however! Fried ham and cheese with garlic soup! Not the healthiest meal I’ve ever had but hearty enough for me to forget about the mini-heart attack I had after finishing it.
I’ve heard there are some beautiful mountain ranges in Slovakia worth hiking and it’s too bad we didn’t have time to venture into nature a bit. I can’t say that I’d list Bratislava as a “a must see” but if you have some extra time in the area, it’s an easy trip into the city and a unique location devoid of large amounts of tourists. A rarity for any city in Europe!
